So yeah...I wrote this for absolutely no good reason.
They say twilight is when the moon and sun alike don’t shine. If that is true, twilight here was eternal.
A shadowy shape slipped forth through a crack in the outer wall, which was a tangle of brush, bramble, and curling, twisting ivy plants, entering what appeared to be a small camp at first sight. The tunic it was wearing snagged on a bramble, and muttered curses resounded as the creature tugged the material free and stepped on a thorny branch. Recovering quickly, the suspicious shape disappeared into the tangles of foliage, and another exited the woodlands around the area close to the wall, a short brown kilt around its heavily muscled chestnut brown frame. On closer inspection, the creature was revealed to be some sort of river otter that had just come out of the forest. It carried a knife loosely in one paw, but there was no light reflecting off the blade to give the creature’s position away to whatever lurked inside the walls of the camp. It walked forward and disappeared into the darkness of the endless night, heading toward the center of what was in the bramble thicket. Wind whistled through the trees, soft at first, howling a sound like a warning siren, then got louder until it stopped all together. Inside the camp, the shadow creature and the otter stood next to each other. The shadow moved a paw to the two knives in a belt around its waist, coming close to the campfire in the clearing as it moved forward one step, and it was then that the creature revealed itself. It was a jet-black ferret with bright yellow eyes that glinted strangely in the firelight, filled with what seemed to be an insane madness, white teeth flashing as it spoke to the otter beside it. They both took a few tentative paces forward and saw the dim silhouette of a red fox in the warm glow. The ferret’s paw moved swiftly and with accuracy at the fox’s head, and the next second there was a knife quivering in between the vermin’s ears. The ferret stepped forward and retrieved the weapon, sighing quietly with relief as it saw the camp was deep in sleep. Not even the wind breathed over the grass, preferring to stay quiet lest the vermin wake. Flecks of ash were spat out by the fire in intervals, and it was one of the flakes that landed on the otter’s muzzle. It sneezed, and then clapped a paw over its mouth as a mink’s head came up across the flames, the brown head almost invisible against the nighttime backdrop. Both the ferret and the otter froze, but there was little need to, as the mink was looking the other way. The otter’s knife zipped through the air and slew the creature. It fell to one side of the flames, and it was purely by luck it did not drop into the fire. But the impact of the mink’s head on the ground knocked the knife into the flames. A bright flash lit up the night and then faded slowly. The otter took out a bow. Fitting an arrow to the string, the otter drew it back and sighted down the oak shaft at a bat zooming about in the air, presumably an enemy. He let the string go, and the arrow hissed through the air before the point collided with the bat’s neck and felled it. The carcass landed on a squirrel’s head, and the otter was close enough to hear the snap of the squirrel’s neck as the bat’s body landed. The otter smiled grimly. Kill two birds with one stone. One rock zinged through the air and missed another fox’s head by inches. The otter looked sideways at the ferret, who was reloading a sling with a good-sized rock. A swish of white and the stone flew through the air to connect with the fox’s skull, slaying it on the spot. The clunking sound it made drew the master of the vermin, a huge old lizard, out of a nearby tent. The warlord walked over to the fox. Whoosh! Wham! Stone and arrow alike crashed into the lizard’s head savagely. The warlord did not even have time to react besides a scream, the sound echoing around the camp, kept in by the bramble and ivy barriers circling the desolate area. All of the vermin seemed to wake up at once. The otter turned and vanished into the brambles in the blink of an eye, whilst the shadowy form of the ferret slew two of the rats with knife thrusts. Then both the invaders were gone into the darkness. The ferret and otter ran for their lives, paws cut and bleeding from the brambles and branches. The otter looked at the dark ferret, panting out a few words to it. ‘Shadow...we have to get in the trees! That way we can shoot them down!’ Shadow scaled a tree, and the otter did the same with another tree close by. Shadow lifted his sling and loaded a medium-sized pebble into it, whipping it around in a blur before he threw the projectile into the air. Loading another rock, he copied his earlier movement. A rat and a squirrel went down and were trampled under countless paws. Shadow looked like he was the tree, as did the otter. Crunch! A heavy stone came down on a fox’s muzzle and the vermin screamed in pain, and then was silenced by an arrow. Shadow whipped off countless pebbles, and the otter Rein Stormfang followed the example. Many vermin died that night under the missiles of Rein the otter and Shadow the ferret. They kept the relentless attack up until they were out of ammunition and there were ten vermin left. The ferret tossed the otter a knife and they jumped into the fight, killing and slaying until every single vermin was on the ground, dead. Rein turned to Shadow and nodded; the only signal that was needed. Both the otter and the ferret vanished into the woodlands, leaving behind a camp full of vermin, all dead. The wind finally swept over the area, bringing with it a thick sheet of rain and cloud. A bright lightning flash lit up the reminants of the battle, the vermin who deserved to suffer, lying on the ground for all eternity.

Far away across the seas from where the slaughter had happened, a huge fort stood tall against the cloudbanked sky, standing against the harsh weather. Morning had just broken, but the clouds still held the sun as a captive in their shadowy depths. But it was of no concern to the creatures of the fort. As far as they were concerned, the sun would eventually come out. The building held nothing but death and evil. It was called Blackrock castle, home to a force of over ten thousand vermin, rats, ferrets, stoats, weasels, ermine, squirrels, foxes, lizards, and a scattering of otherbeasts. Strange how the vermin were given daybreak and sunset, whilst the goodbeasts were forever shrouded in a cloud of darkness. A strange clinking sound rebounded across the wet sands, where three corsairs and their crew, fifteen searats, were about to board a boat to the goodbeasts’ lands. One of the corsairs, a fat, stout squirrel, was stamping the dock with his boots, and that was how the sound had been created. It was shouting as well, apparently at the other two corsairs, a ferret and a rat. ‘Ye stupid dozybeasts! Move yer’ footpaws afore ah sail away widout ye’! The ferret snickered, drawing a carving knife and licking the blade. He pointed it at the squirrel, whose voice had risen to a shrill squeal. ‘Ach, clam it, stonehead. You can’t control ah boat an’ dat’s dat. Ye’ need us aboard with ye’.’ He indicated the corsair rat and the crew of searats, who were all armed to the teeth with knives, daggers, and cutlasses. Helmets covered each crewbeast’s head, only partially so the face was still showing, but a chain mail plate hanging where the helmet rim stopped solved that problem. The squirrel did not answer, but marched up the ramp to the boat. The two other corsairs followed with the load of searats in tow, still haranguing the young squirrel. ‘Ye couldn’t land a flippin’ boat, much less turn it, methinks.’ The ferret rounded on the crewrat that had just spoken, prodding the vermin’s nose with the knife handle as it hissed a warning in between clenched teeth, and then turned to the rat corsair. ‘Ey, Rinkul, d’ye thinks ye know de way fair well?’ The rat, whose full name was Rinkul Darkfur, nodded and turned to the wheel after starting the boat, turning it west until he backed away from the controls and looked at the squirrel corsair, smiling. ‘So, me bold buckoe, d’ye think ye’ can pilot dis thin’? Well, Zeph, d’ye wants to give it a try? But if’n ye’ gets us lost, ye’re goin’ overboard!’ Zeph seemed to back off from the rat’s challenge and shook his head. He staggered over to one of the three cabins on the boat and opened the door, rushing inside and slamming the pine log frame shut. Rinkul sighed and drew his cutlass, dipping it in the water idly and twirling it in random patterns. Then he turned to the ferret. ‘Tis a shame, Rasei Goldclaw. Ah would’ve liked tah kill dat scummy ‘xcuse fer a corsair. He ain’t one o’ us!’ Rasei nodded sagely, picking at a tooth with a scummy claw but ignoring the rat’s words for the most part. He turned to face the fort, which was rapidly disappearing in the thin fog that heralded the morning, wrinkling his nose as a fat drop of rain splattered onto it. He peered up into the clouds, and a raindrop splashed into his eye. The ferret made for his cabin, pointing a paw at a random searat that was lounging about on deck as he opened the door. ‘You dere! Watz ye’re name?’ he said, speaking calmly, but at the same time with menace laden in his voice. A swift flick of the rat’s head and the vermin was facing Rasei Goldclaw. He bowed, then straightened up and saluted with his cutlass. ‘Me name’s Rizz, Cap’n sir.’ Suddenly a knife was touching the rat’s throat as the ferret growled in Rizz’s face, baring thorn-like fangs. ‘Well, mate, ye’re in charge o’ der boat wile us three,’ he pointed to Zeph’s cabin, Rinkul Darkfur, and himself with a grimy claw, ‘stay inna cabins. If’n ye’ disobey, Rizzy, den ye’ die.’ Rizz saluted once more with his sword and turned to the other sea vermin. Before the rat could say a word, the two corsairs had vanished into the cabins. Rizz shrugged and began issuing orders to the crew.
